How to Prepare for a Vocal Recording Session
Prepare the material, the recording setup, and the file handoff before your session begins. A practical plan should identify what you will record, who will operate the workstation, and what you need to take home.
Black Box provides a recording workstation and dedicated vocal booth in Downtown Brooklyn. An engineer is not included. Bring your own qualified engineer, or self-record if qualified.
1. Set your recording priorities
Write down the songs or sections you want to work on and put them in priority order. Identify what each needs: a lead vocal, doubles, harmonies, additional parts, or replacements for specific lines.
Rehearse the material you intend to record and mark the sections that need attention. For an unfinished song, decide whether the reservation is for writing, recording, or both. Share that plan with your engineer before arrival rather than assuming how many completed songs will fit into the booking.
2. Organize the music and notes
Create a clearly named folder for each song. Include the agreed instrumental version, available separate instrumental tracks, existing vocals, and a reference recording when useful. Confirm with your engineer which files and formats they need.
Keep lyrics and arrangement notes accessible. Note the tempo and key when known, and identify the current version of each file. Names such as “SongName_Instrumental_v03” are clearer than several files all called “final.”
Make sure the required files are available locally before you travel. Keep another copy separate from the working files. Do not make access to the material depend entirely on finding a message attachment or downloading a project during paid session time.
3. Check software compatibility and project contents
Black Box provides Pro Tools Studio and Logic Pro. Before continuing an existing project, confirm the software version and any required plug-ins or sample libraries with your engineer. Do not assume another workstation has the same installation as the computer where the project began.
Ask whether audio exports are needed for any parts that cannot be reproduced on the studio setup. Agree on export settings and alignment with the receiving engineer before preparing them.
The editable project and its media both matter. Avid’s guidance on keeping Pro Tools audio files with a session copy describes using Save Copy In with Audio Files selected, plus any other required items. Apple’s guidance on consolidating Logic Pro project assets explains how to copy selected external assets into the project.
Those procedures help gather project material; they do not establish that every required plug-in is installed at the destination. Check both the files and the software requirements.
4. Plan arrival and the first recording check
Read the arrival instructions and confirm the reservation window with everyone attending. Black Box allows a maximum of five registered guests. Studio access is available 24/7 for confirmed bookings; wheelchair access is available 9:30 AM–5:30 PM, except holidays.
Bring an external hard drive or SSD and check beforehand that it has available space and can connect to the workstation. At the start of the session, review the priorities with your engineer, open the material, and make a short test recording. Listen back and resolve any recording or headphone-playback issue before beginning the main takes.
Follow the studio’s workstation instructions. Do not move, disconnect, or reconfigure equipment without approval.
5. Reserve time to save, transfer, and verify
Black Box’s reserved time includes setup and breakdown. Leave enough time before the confirmed end for exports, file transfers, verification, and restoring the room.
Save or transfer the complete session and all required audio, stems, bounces, and other agreed files to your external drive. Reopen the session from that drive, check for missing-media warnings, and play representative sections. Check the exported files as well, and confirm with your engineer what any later delivery will include.
Black Box does not provide long-term guest session storage. Workstation files are temporary and may be removed after the booking. Leave with the required files verified rather than assuming they can be recovered from the studio later.
